India has made history as they’ve become the first country in the world to land on the south pole region of the moon. This is merely days after Russia’s failed attempt.
They have now joined the elite set of countries to achieve a soft landing on the moon, which consists of the United States (US), the former Soviet Union and China.
According to a report by BBC, the unmanned Chandrayaan-3, which means ‘Mooncraft’ in Sanskrit, successfully touched down on the moon at 18:04 India time (12:34 GMT).
“India is now on the moon. We have reached where no other country could. It’s a joyous occasion. India’s successful moon mission is not just India’s alone. This success belongs to all of humanity,” shared Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Among the mission’s major goals is to hunt for water-based ice, which scientists say could support human habitation on the Moon in the future. It could also be used for supplying propellant for potential spacecrafts heading for Mars and other distant destinations.
Scientists have added that the surface area that remains in permanent shadows there is huge and could hold reserves of water-based ice.
