The problem of male fertility in Malaysia is allegedly at an alarming level.
According to a report by Berita Harian, Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu said that this is based on laboratory sperm analysis data from the Malaysian Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), which found that 60% showed abnormal results.
“The matter directly contributes to the increase in fertility problems in married couples in Malaysia.”
“At the same time, the birth rate in our country also shows a downward trend since the last 40 years and it is closely related to the fertility rate with the 2021 data of the Department of Statistics Malaysia which shows 1.7 children for every married woman,” she said.
This comes after Senator Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai had questioned about the ministry’s actions in dealing with the decline in the birth rate in Malaysia, adding that it is a productive step that the government established a Men’s Wellbeing Clinic in Kuala Lumpur last year.
6 more will be opened throughout the Peninsula and Sarawak this year, at LPPKN Subfertility Clinics.
“This clinic offers men’s health screening test services, counseling services for sexual problems and healthy living practices as well as medical treatment to increase fertility,” he explained
The treatment initiative at LPPKN facilities has so far managed to record 6,000 pregnancies and 4,000 births.
Among the factors that contribute to the decline in fertility rates are lifestyle changes and high cost of living, causing couples to limit the number of children. Other factors include the increase in the number of educated women, women’s participation in the labor force as well as late marriage leading to a shortening of the reproductive age.
