To all taxpayers, the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has made a media release on 2nd January 2020 declaring that the Return Form (RF) Filing Programme For The Year 2020 has been uploaded on their official portal.

If you’ve just entered the working environment, the Income Tax Return Form (ITRF) is basically the forms that you will have to file to IRB so that they will charge your income tax accordingly. After all, every responsible working adult has to do their part for the betterment of the country.

It would be best for you to learn it soon to avoid getting into unnecessary trouble when the time comes.

Don’t worry! You can just file your ITRF online. After all, it’s much more convenient to do so as you don’t need to apply for a day off just to submit ITRF directly to their office.

Here’s the guide to file your RF online (for individuals):

  1. Go to the website http://edaftar.hasil.gov.my/index.php and click on “borang pendaftaran online
  2. Complete the application form, make sure the information provided is accurate
  3. Upload the documents required
  4. Take note of the Application No. (No. Permohonan)
  5. Check your status of the application on the website http://edaftar.hasil.gov.my/info.php after three working days, you will receive No. Pin e-Filing and No. Rujukan.
  6. Go to the website https://ez.hasil.gov.my/CI/ and click onto “Login Kali Pertama” (The website is bilingual with Malay and English)
  7. Fill in the form according to your status (e-BE: Resident individual who does not carry on any business OR e-B: Resident individual who carries on business)

Besides reporting your taxes and income, don’t forget to claim your tax relief for 2019 upon filing your taxes in 2020 according to the following types:

1. Individual and dependent relatives — RM9,000

2. Parents:

  • Medical treatment, special needs and carer expenses for parents (verified by medical practitioner) — up to RM5,000
  • Parent — up to RM1,500 for each parent (only one mother and one father)

3. Basic supporting equipment for disabled self, spouse, child or parent — up to RM6,000

4. Disabled individual — RM6,000

5. Education fees for self — up to RM7,000; for the following criteria:

  • Other than master or doctorate in law, accounting, Islamic financing, technical, vocational, industrial, scientific or technology
  • Master or doctorate in any field

6. Medical expenses:

  • For serious diseases for self, spouse or child — up to RM6,000
  • Complete medical examination for self, spouse or child — up to RM500

7. Lifestyle expenses on self, spouse or child — up to RM2,500 including:

  • Purchase of unbanned reading materials such as books, journals, magazines, printed newspapers and other similar publications
  • Purchase of personal computer, smartphone or tablet (not for business use)
  • Purchase of sports equipment abiding by the Sports Development Act 1997 and payment of gym membership
  • Payment of monthly bill for internet subscription (under own name)

8. Purchase of breastfeeding equipment for own use with child of 2 years old and below (deduction only allowable once every 2 year) — up to RM1,000

9. Fees for child of 6 years old and below to a registered childcare centre or kindergarten — up to RM1,000

10. Net deposit in Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (SSPN) — up to RM8,000

11. Husband / wife OR payment of alimony to former wife — up to RM4,000

12. Disabled husband / wife — RM3,500

13. Children:

  • Each unmarried child under the age of 18 — RM2,000
  • Each unmarried child of 18 years old and above who is receiving full-time education (A-level, certificate, matriculation, preparatory courses) — RM2,000
  • Each unmarried child of 18 years old and above who is receiving higher education (diploma or higher in Malaysia; degree or higher for overseas) with courses and institutions approved by the government authority — RM8,000
  • Disabled child — RM6,000

14. Life insurance and EPF for:

  • Pensionable public servant – life insurance premium (up to RM7,000)
  • Other than pensionable public servant – life insurance premium (up to RM3,000) AND contribution to EPF / approved schemes (up to RM4,000)

15. Private Retirement Scheme (PRS) dan Deferred Annuity starting from year of assessment in 2012 until 2021 — up to RM3,000

16. Education and medical insurance — up to RM3,000

17. Contribution to the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) — up to RM250
