The accused, brilliant angjaya

As reported by The Straits Times, the man, 23-year-old Brilliant Angjaya, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exposure and was sentenced to 3 weeks in jail by District Judge Paul Quan.

According to the facts of the case, the incident took place on board a Singaporean Airlines flight from China to Singapore on 23 January.

During the flight, the accused, a business class passenger, had an in-flight meal and two glasses of champagne before falling asleep.

When he woke up, he went to the toilet and there, he suddenly thought of recording a video of himself exposing his private parts to someone and capturing their reaction.

At about 4.45am, the accused returned to his seat and launched the video recording function on his smartphone before unzipping his jeans and exposing his genitals.

When the victim approached the accused with an in-flight meal, she was shocked to see the Angjaya’s actions and looked in the opposite direction.

She then quickly pulled out the foldable table, placed the accused’s meal on it, and left. The victim also noticed that Angjaya’s smartphone was pointing at her and decided to report the incident to her supervisor.

The supervisor then confronted the accused, who denied recording the incident. Angjaya eventually handed over his smartphone to the supervisor upon request and when the latter checked the device, they found videos of the incident, including footage of the victim.

Afterwards, the police were alerted and Angjaya was arrested upon landing.

The judge believed that the accused had exhibited genuine remorse for his action

During the trial, an apology letter to the victim by the accused was read by his lawyer, in which Angjaya revealed that he was leaving China for good after studying there for 5 months and was troubled because didn’t know when he would get to see the friends he made there again.

He added,

“What I did was very stupid. But I believe you deserve an explanation of why I did what I did… You do not deserve the distress and complications I caused you… I hope it gives you at least some comfort knowing that I will face justice for my action.”

While Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Jun Kai pressed for sentencing of 4 to 6 weeks in jail for Angjaya, Judge Quan said that the accused had exhibited genuine remorse and sentenced him to 3 weeks in jail.

Furthermore, he was also granted permission to call his father in Indonesia after sentencing.
