Michelle Yeoh recently won BIG at the Oscars, with her role as Evelyn in the movie, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ which granted her the Best Actress Award. While many are still celebrating her success, legendary and veteran Hong Kong actor, Anthony Wong has something to say about it.

Don’t get it wrong. Anthony has nothing but fond words for Michelle Yeoh, as well as her success at the Oscar, which he believes the latter deserved. However, he’s not a fan of how Michelle has been labeled as “the glory of the Chinese” following her success in the Hollywood industry.

“Is your skin color really that important?”

In his Facebook post, Anthony expressed his thoughts and said that an actor’s race or origin is not important in determining the person’s ability to win an Oscar.

“So, if a black person wins an Oscar, isn’t it weird to say the glory of the black community? What does his success have to do with skin color?”

The 61-year-old actor said, “it’s as if you don’t deserve an Oscar because you’re Chinese, despite being a great actor.”

He then highlighted what’s important to win an award and cited opportunities, capability, acting skills, and the ability to speak fluent English as the factors.

“If you can do all these, there will be a lot more glory for you in the future.”

Not long ago, another HK actor Chapman To also reminded his government that Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian, and not a Hong Konger. This was due to the blunder of an HK politician who addressed Michelle as a Hong Konger.

Anthony has been involved in the entertainment industry since the 80s, and he is still active in his acting roles. He was often stereotyped as villainous, psychotic roles in his younger days.  He gained massive recognition through his role as the serial killer in the 1993 film, The Untold Story.

In 2018, Anthony also made his first debut in a full English-speaking role in a British TV series, Strangers.

Regardless, do you agree with Anthony’s take on glorifying Michelle Yeoh’s success with her race?
