It’s no secret that the world has a lot to improve on, with Malaysia being no exception. One huge example of this is the lack of fellowship when it comes to dark skin representation.

There are still many who need to understand that skin tone should not define a person and people of all colours deserve to be represented, recognised and embraced as equals.

Thankfully, we have exhibitions in Malaysia that help prove this point through eye-opening imagery of individuals of various colours and the beauty of co existing with them.

Introducing, Vignettes of Co Existence, an exhibition by Sunky OG.

The exhibition’s goal is to explore and shine a spotlight on the many themes that come with colourism (such as the emotional discomfort experienced by victims of colourism) while celebrating cultural identification and acceptance through visual excellency.

Kuala Lumpur based photographer, Olasunkanmi Ogunade, who goes by Sunky OG, spoke to World of Buzz about his inspiration behind the exhibition and his gorgeous pictures.

“The inspiration to do this was as a result of my immediate environment and the world at large. Human beings need each other regardless the color of our skin. The exhibition is a photographic series that showcases the authority of inseparability despite our fundamental differences,” he said.

This exhibition is important because now more than ever, we need to spread love.

“I always endeavor to enlighten individuals around me to show more love and affection as it is what we all need. These series tend to emphatically focus on togetherness, despite our differences and now is the time we need to preach more of that due to the uprisings in the world. For example, look at the Black Lives Matter movement. Black lives matter, all lives matter, we all matter but we need to support and empathise with whoever is facing problems presently,” he added.

Sunky also encourages those interested in visiting the exhibit to take part in conversations with other patrons (while social distancing and wearing a mask, of course) about human co existence, beliefs, values and self love.

“I work closely with Impish Studios who are major players in mental health awareness and I also work closely with Live To Inspire and they fight against bullying, body shamming and more. I also have a live talk show on Instagram where we discuss matters arising in the world and how it affects us as people. I teamed up with my friend, Joana (Live to Inspire), to speak up for victims of assaults, create images that explains the emotional trauma that the victims go through. All these are to create awareness that we all need to do better and now is the time,” said Sunky.

“Let’s all co exist in love and harmony.”
