It’s been nearly 2 years since Najib Razak went to prison but rumours about his “lifestyle” in prison is still being discussed today. The Prison Department has denied all claims about Najib’s luxury lifestyle in the prison.

This time, a former inmate who went to the same prison as Najib had some stories to tell, and they’re all about what he allegedly saw, based on a video report by Astro 本地圈.

“Regular clothes in a special block”

Wan Ji, a Malaysian preacher who was recently released from Kajang prison said that Najib has always been in prison, which counters all claims that state Najib is secretly outside of prison.

“He’s there every day. The only time he leaves prison is to attend court trials.”

However, Wan Ji claimed that Najib’s lifestyle in prison is somehow different than the other inmates. In other words, Wan Ji said that Najib receives special treatment, something that other inmates don’t have the “luxury” for.

“He’s dressed in regular clothes. Not exactly in suit, but it’s like he’s home. I didn’t see him in his prisoner’s garb.”

While highlighting the contrast between his experience and Najib’s, Wan Ji also said that he never had the chance to converse with Najib, although he had managed to see the former PM in the Kajang prison from a distance.

“Najib is placed in a special block. Mine is at the back, and Najib’s block is near the field.”

“All inmates are handled with similar SOPs”

The Malaysian Prison Department was well aware of Wan Ji’s “tea”, and the organisation has since responded and clarified that all claims are NOT TRUE.

According to their statement, all inmates are handled with similar SOPs, and no special treatments are given to any inmates, including Najib Razak himself. Wan Ji began serving his jail term in September last year over a 2014 sedition case linked to the Selangor sultan.

In February, it was confirmed that Najib’s 12-year prison sentence had been reduced to half after receiving a royal pardon.

He is expected to be released by August 2028.

We certainly hope that all inmates, regardless of their statuses receive equal treatment behind bars.
