In this day and age, we’re glad to see many Malaysians becoming more aware towards our environment and the importance of keeping it clean for future generations. One such example can be found with this homegrown company when they held a gotong-royong session.

RHB Banking Group (“RHB” or the “Group”) continues to promote greener practices amongst its employees and the community through the RHB Clean-a-thon.

This is Malaysia’s first gotong-royong series by a financial institution. The initiative began with Kampung Sungai Tiang in Bagan Datuk, Perak and will involve several locations throughout Malaysia in 2023.

The Group Managing Director/Group Chief Executive Officer of RHB Banking Group, Mohd Rashid Mohamad, mentioned that the gotong-royong in Kampung Sungai Tiang in Bagan Datuk, Perak over the weekend is the first in the RHB Clean-a-thon series where they reinforced their presence in halting environmental degradation. “A total of more than 400 participants, including volunteers from RHB, got together for the day-long clean-up activity. A total of 2,250kg in waste items was collected, including plastic, glass bottles, aluminium cans, paper materials and metal objects.

Mr. Mohd Rashid further explained that the RHB Clean-a-thon initiative fosters and integrates sustainable practices amongst RHB’s employees and the community. The series was inspired by RHB’s highly successful Chinese New Year campaign film, “A Spark for Change” that narrates the true story of how 10 children took the initiative to tackle a waste management situation in their village.

This selfless initiative had inspired the whole village to take action towards becoming part of the solution. A small token of RM100 was also given to each of the children via their RHB Ocean Harmoni savings accounts, as recognition of their efforts and to reinforce their good values and actions.

“We are pleased that our kick-off at Kampung Sungai Tiang had many more participants than we had anticipated, with initial registration targets oversubscribed by 34%. As a token of appreciation for their efforts, participants were given limited-edition medals and also received special offers on RHB products and services.” said Mr. Mohd Rashid.

This initiative firmly demonstrates RHB’s efforts in supporting the United Nation’s Sustainability Development Goal 13 “Climate Change”, and in line with the Group’s Sustainability pillar of enriching and empowering communities. Over the course of 2023, the RHB Clean-a-thon series will see similar activities that would benefit the society and environment at several locations in the country, where they anticipate to clear substantial amount of rubbish from other areas of high environmental impact.

The RHB Clean-a-thon initiative is also part of the Group’s wider sustainable initiative under the RHB Ocean Harmoni banner by RHB Islamic Bank Berhad. To date, an important milestone under the RHB Ocean Harmoni was to distribute over 100,000 units of eco-friendly recycled plastic RHB Debit Card-I.
