Life is hard. Sometimes, it is so hard that it is unbearable, causing people to do what they would not normally do.

Last Sunday (October 16, 2022), a pregnant woman nearly drowned near pillar 32 of the Penang Bridge as she was swept away by the current.

In a video that has been widely circulated, it is believed that the woman had jumped off the bridge.

A fishing boat first noticed the woman when the boat’s helmsman wanted to move the boat closer to the pillar at about 6.45 pm.

Mohd. Sobri Karim, 37, said he was surprised to find that a woman had fallen in between the boat and the bridge pillar.

“It was very loud. At that time, there were four anglers on the boat. I could clearly see that the woman was drowning in the current.”

“I quickly asked the fishermen to toss the boat’s mooring rope towards the woman and wrapped her hand around it. We managed to lift her onto the boat.

“As soon as she was brought up, I was surprised to see that the masked woman in her 20s was actually heavily pregnant, probably six months along.”

“She was deliriously crying the whole journey to Region One Marine Police Base in Batu Uban,” said Mohd Sobri.

He added that the woman was handed over to the police and the team from the Ministry of Health (KKM) who arrived there after being contacted by Mohd Sobri and his friends during the boat ride back.
