A famous Malaysian char kuey teow vendor, known for not wearing any footwear while cooking up a storm on a charcoal stove, is currently seeking treatment after vomiting blood halfway through preparing a meal.
According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the 71-year-old uncle behind Barefoot Char Kuey Teow in George Town, Penang, left his wife, fellow vendors, and customers horrified when he suddenly vomited blood this afternoon (30 January).

Despite the frightening situation, he didn’t lose consciousness, even though his shirt was covered in blood. Thankfully, a vendor was quick to call an ambulance, and the uncle was taken to a hospital for treatment.
He is believed to have previously undergone heart surgery and had felt unwell while frying rice noodles. At the hospital, doctors determined that he had suffered a stomach haemorrhage.

Having become a highlight of food culture in Penang, the uncle’s Barefoot Char Kuey Teow stall has risen to fame in recent years, earning him a mural on Penang’s well-known Cecil Street, where he will be forever immortalised.
We wish the popular vendor a speedy recovery.
