We have always wondered, why do our neighbours up north have really loooooong names?
Names like Thaksin Shinawatra, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, Aliza Napartivaumnuay, Moo Natavud Pungcharoenpong and many more, are really a mouthful to pronounce and frankly will be butchered to non-Thai speakers.
Taking to TikTok, netizen kattoksthai explains why Thais have really long names.
“Why are Thai names so long? I get this question a lot.”
“Not all Thai names are long, but long names are not uncommon.”
“Thai names are long because they are unique to one another. You rarely see people sharing the same last name unless they come from the same family.”
She adds that Thai names can also be a combination of great meanings behind them.
“For example, actor Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat, whose last name translates to ‘To have a prosperous life’.”
“Another example is Win Metawin Opas-iamkajorn which roughly translates to ‘An emanating bright light’.”
So now you know! Always remember to ask a person how to politely pronounce their name, to avoid butchering of what could have been a beautiful name.
