Since young, we have been taught to respect our elders and not to commit crime but I guess the people who robbed a 94-year-old banana seller in Jambi, Indonesia didn’t learn such basic human lessons.

On Tuesday, Suratman was robbed of Rp1.1 million (approx. RM353) when he was peddling his wares. According to Coconuts, on that fateful morning, he had chosen a spot at one of the city’s main streets for his business that day. That was when the heartless robbers drew up next to the car and told Suratman he wanted to buy Rp15,000 (approx. RM4.80) of bananas.

He requested Suratman to enter the car to pass him the bananas because he didn’t want to be seen buying the bananas as he was fasting. However, when the old man entered the car, the robbers forced him to empty his pockets of the cash he was carrying, which amounted to Rp1.1 million (approx. RM353).

A heartbreaking video of the poor old man lamenting his loss after the incident went viral and touched the hearts of netizens nationwide. He also said that he was trying to save money to buy chairs for an Eid celebration at his house later in the month. Poor thing!

Luckily, his plight did not go unnoticed, as a caring netizen, TommyReza Chokolatoz helped Suratman’s robbery go viral and also asked netizens for help so that Suratman can have a happy Eid. In just one short day, the sympathetic netizens collected Rp37,197,000 (approx. RM11,945) for the banana seller through Facebook alone.

Tommy posted an update shortly after, which included multiple photos and videos that showed him passing on the donation to a grateful Suratman. That’s not all, even the Jambi Governor Zumi Zola was moved by his predicament that he donated Rp5 million (approx. RM1,605)  and bought all his bananas for Rp500,000 (approx. RM160). So kind of them!
