There’re many ways for expectant and new mothers to take care of themselves before and after birth, but it is not a one size fits all situation because pregnancy is an experience unique to each mother.

Therefore, it is nice to be able to share experiences and exchange tips on how to not only survive, but thrive as a new mother!

Recently, Dr Amalina Bakri, a Malaysian physician revealed her secret to looking healthy and energetic just four days after giving birth!

This came after netizens were surprised to see how fit and glowy the doctor looked in a photo she shared of her and her spouse taking their baby daughter out on her first walk.

In her Instagram post, Dr Amalina shared some habits she practices as part of her postpartum care. “The tips are science-backed and recommended by obstetrics specialists as well as my own experience as a doctor,” she said.

1. Practise a healthy and balanced diet for life

Firstly, Dr Amalina suggests eating in moderation to maintain an ideal weight, eating vegetables and fruits as well as reducing salt, sugar and oil.

How To Eat A Balanced Diet

This means drinking 2-3 litres of water a day and minimising sugary drinks such as bubble tea and Milo.

“There is also no need to abstain from eggs and chicken if you are not allergic,” she says.

2. Physical activity

Besides diet, Dr Amalina recommends gradually increasing the intensity of your daily activities. “Do not carry things that are heavier than your baby for six weeks.”

She also shared that if your delivery was normal and without any complications, you may start doing light exercises whenever you’re ready. This includes walking, kegel (pelvic floor) and stomach exercises.

Whereas for high impact exercises such as aerobics and running, you are encouraged to wait six weeks before starting.

“Increased bleeding or a colour change in the blood after exercising is a sign that you’re overdoing it. Lessen your exercises and make sure to get plenty of rest.”

3. Care for your wounds

If you had a vaginal delivery, take good care of your perineum. “Wash with water from front to back & wipe dry daily. Change the maternity pad every 3-4 hours.”

“If you had a C-section, clean and wipe dry your wound daily.”

Dr Amalina also advises on keeping clean and showering every day, wearing loose clothes & cotton underwear and taking painkillers. Laxatives can also be taken if necessary to avoid constipation.

4. No sex

And obviously (or maybe not!), she encourages avoiding sex until bleeding stops or till six weeks after giving birth.

Finally, she urges new mothers to take care of their mental health, to not get stressed and to enjoy motherhood. “Seek support from your husband and family.”

“A healthy lifestyle should be practiced throughout life, not just during the first 44 days after giving birth. So, those are the simple tips to be healthy throughout your life.”

Assuming there aren’t any complications, everything sems quite easy to execute! Thank you Dr Amalina for once again sharing your wisdom.
