Let this be a reminder that the pandemic is NOT a joke and we should all stay safe!
Based on daily updates from KKM and the Health DG, Malaysians are all aware that the ICU in Malaysia is reaching its breaking point. In fact, the situation has reached a point where doctors have to choose which patients get admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital in Kedah due to a shortage of beds.
Timothy Lau, a doctor from Hospital Serdang, shared a heartbreaking moment between a patient and her son just moments before she was intubated. In his Instagram post, the doctor said that before intubating his patients, he always gives them time to call their loved ones.
“Mummy doesn’t blame you for bringing home Covid-19. Don’t blame yourself if I don’t end up waking up.”
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Timothy said that going to work nowadays is like going to a battlefield and it’s simply “controlled havoc”. In addition to the overwhelming number of Covid-19 cases, they also have to manage the trauma cases coming from the Accident & Emergency department.
“We are quite stretched out physically, mentally, emotionally and also in terms of hospital resources.”
He added that the team spirit in his Emergency department has never been tested to this extent but he’s happy that all healthcare workers are united as one including other departments and they treat all patients without any reservations.
We asked Dr. Timothy what advice he would give Malaysians and the first thing he said was for everyone to follow SOPs at all times. This includes wearing your mask and also washing or sanitising your hands no matter where you go. He also told Malaysians to not go out and eat with their friends or colleagues as that is when they are most vulnerable as “Covid-19 doesn’t discriminate between your family and friends”.
The doctor also reminded everyone to get vaccinated and not compare vaccines. Instead, he said to focus on the common ground which is that most vaccines are proven to reduce the severity of Covid-19 if one contracts it.
Finally, the doctor simply said to think of your loved ones during this unprecedented period, especially the ones who are more vulnerable and the ones who do not deserve to suffer simply due to the selfishness of some highlighting the hashtag #protectourelderly. “The virus and the state of the pandemic are real, whether we like it or not, and EVERYONE, not just the frontliners, has a part to play in this,” he said.
Stay home and stay safe everyone!
