7 days after its release in Malaysia, local horror flick Pulau grossed a whopping RM2 million as announced by GSC Cinemas. The movie is not only doing well locally but also in other Asian markets, such as Vietnam where the movie grossed Rm400,000 after only 4 days.

If the unforeseen massive success of John Wick Chapter 4 may lead to a 5th one, what about the future of Pulau? According to the producer, Fred Chong, a sequel, Pulau 2 is being produced! Despite the criticisms that the movie has been receiving, Fred said that he is ready to move on to the sequel of Pulau.

“That has not deterred my will to produce a sequel. You can expect to see a collaboration between our country and Indonesia,” Fred explained.

As of now, the entire aspect of the production of the film is being planned and they are currently shortlisting the actors who will be part of Pulau 2. The list of actors, which may include those from Indonesia is being kept confidential at the time being.

However, Pulau 2 will not pick up where the first movie ended as Fred teased that the sequel will be a “fresh piece”.

At the time of writing (April 6), not much is known about the movie as Fred believes that it’s not the time to spill more tea about the sequel. 1 thing for sure, Fred is determined to maintain the multiracial element as shown in the 1st movie.

Moving on to my upcoming projects

In response to the criticisms, Fred told Utusan that he refused to comment further as he has bigger fish to fry.

“I don’t want to say anything about other matters. I have other projects to focus on this year, so wait for Pulau 2 next year.”

As for the success of Pulau in other Asian markets, Fred has nothing but fond words for the team where he expressed his happiness for the entire team.

“I’m proud that Pulau received a lot of positive feedbacks from the foreign audience.”

To him, it is a huge development because it shows how local production is being appreciated in foreign markets. Fred also said that it is something positive as no local films have made this much in foreign markets previously.

No release dates have been given for Pulau 2 at the moment.

To those who have caught up with Pulau, what do you think of the movie? Are you excited about its sequel, and who do you wish to see in it?
