Many of you have probably heard of the incident involving a very smartly dressed Singaporean couple bullying an elderly man for taking their “reserved” table at a hawker centre.
The incident was caught on video and quickly became the subject of outrage among netizens.
However, it seemed that the elderly man’s family members weren’t aware of what happened until the news spread all over the internet.
The daughter of the victim, Caroline Ng, took to Facebook and responded to the incident in a public post, saying,
“Today, no words can express my outrage and disgust to learn of an incident that happened to my dad. The incident took place on 21st April and I only got to know of it through several online postings and after watching the video.”
“What I find unbelievable is for the entire 2 days, my dad never once mentioned a word of it. When I asked him why didn’t he make it known to us? Why didn’t he make a report?”
She continued to say,
“In his own words, he told me he didn’t think anything will come out of it, will the police even act on it? Does it make sense to pursue it? Will anyone even believe him?”
“He figured he will have to just brush it off, and move on.”
“I was stumped for a moment, only then it dawned on me that there are folks out there like my dad who fell victim to similar unruly behaviours, and yet they don’t think they have a voice.”
However, she pointed out that her father wasn’t aware that the incident was caught on camera, which meant that there was indeed hard evidence against the couple after all.
She was also grateful that multiple eye witnesses have stepped forward and filed police reports.
Caroline also pointed out the terrible and selfish ‘system’ Singaporeans use for reserving seats in hawker centres.
“Bottom line is, it doesn’t matter who was there first. My dad only wanted to share the table, there were only 2 of them and their food wasn’t even ready.”
“Will it kill them just to share the seats??!”
To make things worse, the elderly man also has a medical condition! Not cool!
Now, all Caroline can hope for is that people learn from this and become kinder to the elderly community.
She also hopes that whoever knows the couple will step up and report them to the police.
“To the ugly couple who did this to my dad, you know who you are. What goes around, comes around. Even if we don’t find you, God sees everything.”
We hope justice will be served soon and that the couple answer for their disrespectful behaviour!
