A husband and wife duo in India allegedly sacrificed themselves by cutting off their own heads with a guillotine-like device. They apparently decapitated themselves as a sacrificial ritual.

According to a report by CBS News, the husband, 38-year-old Hemubhai, and his wife, 35-year-old Hansaben, conducted the ritual in a hut on their farm in Gujarat, India.

“The couple first prepared a fire altar before putting their heads under a guillotine-like mechanism held by a rope. As soon as they released the rope, an iron blade fell on them, severing their heads which rolled into the fire”, shared a police sub-inspector.

The duo had allegedly designed the mechanism in such a way that their severed heads would end up in the fire altar, which completed their sacrificial ritual.

Police officers had launched an investigation into this matter and found a note addressed to the couple’s family members, informing them of their sacrifice. The family shared that the couple had conducted prayers in the hut every day for the last year.

The couple are survived by their parents and their 2 children.

Human sacrifices are apparently common in India, as earlier this month, 5 men were arrested for sacrificing a woman in 2019 in a ritual. More than 100 cases have also been reported between 2014 and 2021.
