Times are tough now, and it’s not just due to the ongoing inflation but also the competition in many industries that are getting stronger. A Malaysian man’s recent conversation with a convenience store worker had him reflecting on another ongoing issue.

Is your talent headed in the right direction?

Afizie recently visited a convenience store in Selangor and when he was about to pay for his items, he was amused by how well and fluently the Malay cashier communicated with a customer from China. Afizie praised her for her ability to converse in multiple languages and suggested she uses her wide potential in some other places.

“Try to apply for customer service/sales/fraud in multinational corporations (MNCs), or any related field where you can utilise your skills,” he told the cashier.

Afizie believes that will at least grant her not only the language allowance but also a wider career field. However, the girl’s response left him shocked, because his suggestions were considered and done before they met.

“I’ve applied to many companies but I got rejected or ghosted. I’m an engineering grad but it’s not easy for me to land myself a job.”

He was stunned but he couldn’t deny that has been the reality, as he, too, experienced the situation in the past. The girl, who is an engineering grad told him that she’s working at the convenience store at the moment until she finds the right opportunity.

It didn’t take long for his tweet to go viral and many good samaritans stormed the comment sections to offer the girl a job. Yesterday (June 1), Afizie decided to visit the girl again to offer some friendly advice, and here’s what he told the 24-year-old girl, who started learning Chinese when she was in primary school.

  • Ramp up her job-hunting game – utilise the job-seeking apps wisely.
  • Improve her resume so it’ll appear more professional.
  • Be patient and be consistent in applying for jobs AFTER she fixes her resume.
  • Stay where she is until she receives an official offer letter.

There was obviously more that the duo discussed during their meeting but Alfizie mentioned in his tweet that it was between both of them. At the end of his tweet, Afizie highlighted the reality that many talents have gone wasted when they’re not utilised in the right place.

To those who have just graduated and are still hunting for a proper job, we wish you nothing but the best of luck!
