Legal experts are calling out a company in China for violating employee rights after they tracked “lazy” employees’ bathroom breaks and took photos of them.

The South China Morning Post reported that the company in Guangdong province, southern China, was accused on January 20 of printing and posting up photos of several employees using the toilet on the bathroom wall.

The staff were punished for taking long toilet breaks

The company even took extreme steps to punish employees for spending too much time in the bathroom, smoking, and playing mobile games there.

One staff member was in the bathroom for too long and didn’t respond when someone knocked, so another staff climbed a ladder and used their phone to take pictures.

They put up the photos in public as a warning

The company said they made the photos public to warn others about the behaviour and also mentioned that smoking has been banned in the bathrooms.

However, they added that the photos were taken down a few hours later due to aesthetic concerns, mentioning that “they don’t look good.”

Lawyer Zhu Xue from Celue Law Firm called it a violation of employee rights.

“Companies shouldn’t be keeping track of their employees’ laziness, especially not in illegal ways,” Zhu said.
