Malaysia is facing a significant rise in mental health challenges, with the latest National Health and Morbidity Survey reporting over one million Malaysians aged 15 and above suffering from depression. Cases among children and adolescents have more than doubled in recent years, highlighting an urgent need for accessible and effective wellness solutions.

Amid these challenges, Malaysians are seeking more accessible ways to nurture emotional well-being, not just through professional care, but also within the comfort of their homes. One gentle yet powerful tool is colour therapy. More than just decoration, colours influence how we feel, heal, and connect.

How Colour Therapy Works: Science and Expert Insights

Prof. Dr Norhisham, Neuroscience and Colour Therapy Expert, explains: “Colour plays a profound role in shaping our mental and emotional wellbeing. As electromagnetic waves, colours interact with the brain’s neural pathways, influencing mood, cognition, and physiological responses. When we’re exposed to certain hues, they can activate specific regions of the brain, helping to regulate emotional states and enhance mental clarity. For example, colours like violet stimulate the hypothalamus, helping with focus and emotional maturity.”

Practical Steps: Creating a Colour-Smart Home

Prof Dr Norhisham further explains, “Supporting mental health at home does not require drastic changes; it starts with awareness and intentional choices. In Colour Vibration Therapy (CVT), every colour carries a unique vibration that can influence emotions, hormones, and even physiological balance.

“By choosing the right hues for each space, Malaysian families can create homes that not only look beautiful but also support emotional well-being.”

According to Prof. Norhisham, these colours can be applied at home in simple ways:

  • Turn bedrooms and study areas into calming sanctuaries.

Gentle hues like Blue Pitcher (NP 7845) bring peace and relaxation, while Green Heights (NP 6744) restores balance and harmony. Together, they create safe, soothing spaces where children can focus during the day and sleep more restfully at night.

  • Fill family spaces with joy and warmth.

Cheerful tones such as Sunbeam (NP 7550) spark optimism, Autumn Blaze (NP 6205) fuels lively conversations, and Peaking Pink (NP 6287) nurtures love and affection. These shades brighten living rooms and dining areas, turning everyday moments into lasting memories.

  • Create reflective corners for mindfulness.

High-frequency shades like Royal Carriage (NP 7940) and Heather Ashes (NP 6455) sharpen concentration and calm overthinking. Perfect for a meditation nook, prayer area, or reading corner, these colours help restore mental clarity.

  • Balance bold colours with neutrals and natural textures.

While red can inspire energy and courage, too much may trigger restlessness or frustration. Pairing bold shades like Liberty Blue (NP 6533) with neutrals like cream, grey, or taupe—and incorporating wood or plants—grounds the space and prevents overstimulation.

  • Maximise natural light to activate colour vibrations.

Sunlight enhances the vibration of colour, making shades feel more vibrant and uplifting. Soft curtains, reflective walls painted in airy tones like Bonito Flakes (NP 8208), and open layouts invite brightness that lifts both spaces and spirits.
