A Malaysian man is warning the general public to check their bills before making payments at eateries after he was charged over RM200 for his family’s Sahur meal at a mamak restaurant in Johor Bahru.

Taking to his Threads page, Firdaus Shaaban shared how this incident happened on the first day of Ramadan, when his bill had included the meals eaten by the customers seated at the same table before he and his family arrived.

Over RM200 for 7 adults, 3 children

He wrote, “To you guys who bring your families to mamak eateries, always check your bills. Don’t let what happened to me happen to you.”

“How can they say that the bill included the (customers who were seated at) the table before us? It’s illogical. Thankfully, my wife checked the bill. I am definitely the type who will pay the bill without looking at it.”

Firdaus explained that he and his family consist of 7 adults and 3 children, all of whom ordered simple dishes such as fried rice and mixed rice, with an add-on of Tandoori chicken.

“So, when it came time to pay, I went to the counter. The bill was over RM200. I felt weirded out, like, is this correct? But, because I was tired, I just paid. My wife asked me how much the bill was, and I told her over RM200. Everyone was shocked and asked to check the bill,” he added.

That’s when the family discovered multiple items on the bill that they did not order. When confronted, the staff explained that they had accidentally included the previous customers’ items in the bill.

“It doesn’t make sense. How can you charge us for the previous customers’ items? Don’t tell me that when they left the restaurant, you didn’t chase them down and ask them to pay their bill? You would have chased them and reminded them to pay.”

“Another thing is, in your system, before you key in our orders, you would have seen that there are already other orders there. Don’t tell me you didn’t notice,” Firdaus questioned.

In the end, Firdaus managed to get a refund for the food items that they did not order and has since urged the general public not to make payments without checking the bills first.

WORLD OF BUZZ has reached out to the eatery for comment but has yet to receive a response.
