5 people were injured from being hit by a signboard during a storm, while they were at a food festival held at the Tawau Sports Complex in Sabah at about 10:30pm on Sunday (June 8).

According to a report by Sinar Harian, all victims suffered minor injuries, including scratches on their bodies and swollen muscles. One of the victims, 40-year-old Ardyhansah Amat, shared that the incident occurred when a storm suddenly hit the food festival site on the last day of the 3-day event.

“We arrived at around 9pm, and after walking for an hour, we decided to go home. But, before that, we managed to take some pictures. Suddenly, a strong wind picked up, and dust started flying until it got into our eyes. We wanted to move because the wind was getting stronger, but it wasn’t raining yet,”

“We had just taken 2 steps when the signboard suddenly fell towards us. It all happened in the blink of an eye. I didn’t have time to run and only had time to use my hand to protect my head from being hit by the sign,” he said.

The atmosphere became chaotic, but RELA officers as well as passersby immediately jumped into action to help the group, as some were trapped under the signboard.

“We checked each other’s heads, everything was fine, only our hands were sore from the wounds. One of our friends was still lying on the road because he was trapped and hit by a piece of iron, same like me.”

“My friend informed me that he was crushed and hit on the back and waist. However, after further examinations, there was nothing serious, just scratches on the body and swollen muscles after receiving treatment at a clinic,” he added.

Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt from the ordeal.
