Coldplay is currently on their concert tour around the world and they recently made their stop at Manila, Philippines on 4 April.
The fans in Philippines were waiting for their arrival excitedly, especially Ken Valiant Santiago, a hardcore Coldplay fan who lined up for hours just to buy the best tickets he could afford.
But his dream of seeing the band in action was dashed when Ken, a medical student was unfortunately diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in February which caused him to be bed-ridden.
Sadly, he gave his platinum ticket to his younger brother and consoled himself by listening to Coldplay’s songs in the hospital.
Seeing his unhappiness, Ken’s older brother Khiel decided to take matters into his own hands and tried to make it up to him.
Khiel penned an open letter to Coldplay on Facebook, saying,
“A week ago, he (Ken) already turned over his Platinum ticket to my younger brother. He does not show he is sad, he said it’s okay. But we can feel that he really wants to be there. But due to his health condition we cannot compromise on this issue. We and him especially have already accepted the fact that he can’t attend the most special Coldplay concert for him.
I am sending you this open letter to ask a little favour if the band could just say “hi” or a short message for him to make him feel better. We are looking forward to your quick response.”
That was his little request, just a greeting from the band to make Ken happy. The message eventually reached Rhiza Pascua, the head of Music Management International, the organizer of the Coldplay concert in Manila.
She did something much more amazing, and actually arranged for Chris Martin to personally make a surprise visit to the young man at the hospital right before the concert.
Imagine the shock and incredible happiness Ken felt when his idol showed up at the hospital and spent some quality time with him. Although Ken couldn’t speak because of his illness, they managed to communicate using a white board.
“I can’t thank you enough,” Ken wrote.
Chris even came bearing gifts for his avid fan, which included his cap, Coldplay merchandise and a copy of the band’s latest album, A Head Full of Dreams. Aww, isn’t he sweet?
Chris also asked Ken if he had any special song requests for the concert later and he requested for Ink. Later during the concert, Chris dedicated the song to his fan and said, “I’m sorry you can’t be here, I hope you get well soon, this is for Ken.”
Seriously, where are the tissues?
We wish Ken a speedy recovery!
