Just last week, a question posted to the r/AskReddit board recently gained a lot of responses. The question was, “What’s the best job-quitting story you can tell?”.
While many of the responses were pretty amusing and entertaining, one particular response from a former manager earned the praises of hundreds of netizens.
Reddit user shortadamlewis shared that he used to work as a contract project manager on a government project in the United States.
However, during one of their periodic reviews, he was told that their contract would not be renewed and he had to lay off his entire staff (including himself) with just 8 hours notice. Their last day was the following day.
An excerpt from his post reads,
“I brought everyone into the conference room first thing the next day, let everyone know that we were all out of a job and that today was everyone’s last day.”
“I had everyone email me their resumes, and we went over everyone’s on the conference room projector and updated them over the course of the day.”
“I then printed out ‘reference’ sheets for everyone, and we all spent the remainder of the day writing letters of recommendation for each other.”
“I ordered everyone pizza, and bought everyone a round of drinks at the bar next door.”
Things didn’t turn out too bad though, as he said most of his former staff managed to get jobs by the end of the following week (thanks to his hard work with the recommendation letters, no doubt!).
Needless to say, many Redditors were touched by the story.
It’s really cool seeing bosses go above and beyond for their employees. We’re glad most of them also found employment after abruptly getting laid off, too!
