Recently, the nation was shocked at the news of former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin being hauled up to court and charged with 4 counts of abuse of power and 2 counts of money laundering for alleged wrongdoings during his premiership. Moreover, he is also expected to be charged with another offence again tomorrow at the High Court.

However, despite the charges, Muhyiddin, who is also the president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has gotten unanimous backing to continue leading the party. As reported by The Malaysian Reserve, Bersatu, which held its annual general assembly yesterday unanimously agreed to retain Muhyiddin as party president.

Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu presented a special motion yesterday as the representative of the Bersatu Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) to retain Muhyiddin as president and stressed that there is no issue and no need for him to resign. Faizal further elaborated that Bersatu’s struggles for the sake of the country and the prosperity of other races through its affiliate wing require the party to remain strong and undivided.

Muhyiddin in his speech then thanked all delegates who continued to support his Bersatu presidentship and revealed that he had offered to resign at the MPT Bersatu meeting a day prior but was rejected. The former Prime Minister asserted,

“In support of the principle and motto of our party’s struggle which ‘Bersatu, Bermaruah, Beramanah’. I take full responsibility for the charges levelled against me. However, the Bersatu MPT has rejected my offer to resign,”

Muhyiddin, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Pagoh then vowed to continue his duties as the party’s president at the request of the assembly.
