Century eggs and salted eggs are considered a delicacy in Asia and in Malaysia, we simply love them. Just look at all the food we have centered around these eggs! However, it looks like people from other nations do not appreciate this food and have even deemed it “unfit for human consumption”. WHAT?
In a recent statement on Italy Ministry of Health’s website, they said that they have seized 800 duck eggs from a shop and while most of them were century eggs, others were salted duck eggs. Apparently, some of the officials were doing some routine food safety checks in preparation for the Easter holidays and came across the stock of eggs.
It was reported that two men who were selling it in Italy are of Chinese nationality. Although we know and love century eggs, they are reportedly prohibited in Italy because they are imported in violation of specific EU directives. The officials said that the source of the eggs could not be traced and was of uncertain origin.
The two Chinese men were reported to the Health Authority and the batch of eggs was deemed as “unfit for human consumption”. This has caused netizens to be puzzled, as they find that century eggs are simply delicious while others said that some foreign food can be even grosser. While you may be trying to wrap your head around this, this is actually not the first time that foreigners have deemed century eggs to be gross.
In fact, when Sweden opened its Disgusting Food Museum in 2018 for three months, century egg, durian and stinky tofu were just some of the food that were on display. These are some of Asians’ favourite food too!
Well, to each their own when it comes to food because everyone has their own tastes right?
