Inspired by Mahatma Ghandi, strategic communications consultant Nathaniel Tan went on a hunger strike to call for a change in the way Covid-19 is managed.
Setting up shop at the corner of Jalan Rahim Kajai and Lorong Rahim Kajai, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, his efforts to prove a point began on Wednesday (4 August 2021).
Taking to Instagram, @nat.asasi writes, “Nathaniel Tan is on a hunger strike in solidarity with other Malaysians who are going hungry.”
Making five demands as a goal to his strike, his demands are the empowerment of experts for Covid-19 decision-making, RM500 million funding for Covid-19 hospitals, a stop on muzzling frontliners from speaking out, clear and accurate information on companies allowed to operate, and a free supply of N95 masks and hand sanitizers for all hospital workers and staff.
Keeping the masses updated on his Twitter and Facebook, he adds that now is the time for action.
“Enough talk. Enough press statements. Enough WhatsApp chats.”
“I don’t encourage mass gatherings. I encourage nothing that might put anyone except myself at risk.”
“I will do what any Malaysians can do. I will take a short walk out of my home and sit at the corner of Jalan Rahim Kajai and Lorong Rahim Kajai 4 in TTDI.”
And after spending his first night out, he shared his interaction with a fellow Malaysian who said that “We should be focused on Covid-19 right now and nothing else. She said that her husband told her, she would a better Prime Minister than the current one we have.”
Let’s hope that the efforts carried out by Nathaniel Tan will receive the attention it needs in making things better for Malaysia.
