“I had serious, serious drinking problems. I did crazy things when I blacked out”, claimed Clarence Teo, the abusive doctor who allegedly punched his girlfriend with such great force that she her face was found physically marred “beyond recognition”.
Yesterday, the deranged abuser testified his case in court for the alleged assault. If you haven’t read about the incident yet, you can do so here.
In Teo’s hearing, the troubled doctor claimed that he was a severe alcoholic which led to his blackouts where he did “crazy things.” But he said that his relationship with Ms.Rachel Lim, the assault victim, worked because she too suffered from bipolar disorder.
“We were trying to help each other, support each other,” said the alleged abuser.
In his testimony, Teo never addressed the assault. He merely emphasised that the two were trying to deal with their own mental disorders. Ms.Lim was, according to the abusive doctor, prescribed with an anti-psychotic drug and mood stabilisers.
“I told her my issues with alcoholism… that I had serious, serious drinking problems,” he said. “I had lost jobs because of it. I had lost relationships because of it.”
He went on to say that his alcoholism meant that he would argue with Ms.Lim over “very ridiculous and nonsensical things” over the course of their relationship.
“Small things would blow up very big, very quickly; that was the nature of our relationship”.
He even reminisced about happier days when they were both mentally “stable”.
The abuser said he was surprised that Ms.Lim didn’t include her bipolar disorder in her testimony, claiming that she had given him a mood stabiliser when he was drunk. “After I had taken it, she said I looked like a peaceful cat and she was laughing about it.”
In the doctor’s testimony, he said that they were out on a dinner date and went to a karaoke studio after that because Ms.Lim wanted to sing. She allegedly ordered drinks to loosen up which is why the alcoholic started drinking too.
He said, “I just drank more and more after that”, before the couple proceeded to a Thai disco. “On my phone… There were photos and videos of us laughing and playing the fool at the Thai disco, so I inferred we were still very happy.
However, the alleged abuser claims to have no recollection of what happened after the disco. In fact, what he remembered was that, “we went to my room and we had sex”.
All he remembered of the assault was people “barging into the room” to arrest him. “The next thing I remember was waking up in a cell… I didn’t know where I was (but) someone told me I was at the Cantonment Police Complex.”
According to Today Online, the court first heard the allegations of Ms.Lim who was assaulted by her then, boyfriend, Teo, because she was reluctant to have sex with him.
As court documents reveal, Ms.Lim could not escape her abuser as when she tried to leave his bedroom, he followed her and forced her back into the room, locking the door.
This was followed by the brutal assault that led to Ms.Lim crying out in terror at the top of her voice, only to have Teo’s father call the police on his own son at 4am. The authorities had to break down Teo’s door as they feared for her life.
