Being bilingual isn’t just about mastering another language but a gateway to other cultures. So yes, learning a second language does have its fair share of perks!

In a recent viral video, MP Steven Sim, made headlines by sharing an interaction he had with a firefighter named Kumar on his Facebook page.

“Allocating RM50,000 to the JURU volunteer fire brigade”

Steven Sim had visited the Johor voluntary fire brigade with a mission to show support, generously donating RM50,000 for a new fire engine.

In the video, firefighter Kumar expresses genuine gratitude for the fire engine fund that was expressed with heartfelt sincerity in fluent Hokkien.

Kumar is not only receiving praise for his fluency in Hokkien but also for his heartfelt response when questioned about his decision to become a firefighter. He explained,

“We do what we do to assist others. We’re always happy and ready to lend a hand. Just as YB has aided us with the donation, we are happy to have received your assistance. It’s the same feeling we carry towards our work.”

Kumar continued to explain about the brigade’s role in firefighting and flood assistance, highlighting that he’s driven by passion rather than money.

With nearly a decade of service, he takes joy in helping others, believing it’s a feeling shared by all.
