Mussels are like the superheroes of the seafood world. People have been eating them for thousands of years, but their relevance to consumers, although it has been at an all-time high, may not last for long…

In recent news, the Negeri Sembilan Health Department issued a statement that the Port Dickson District Health Office received word from Port Dickson Hospital about people possibly experiencing food poisoning from consuming mussels.

8 suspected cases of mussel poisoning, with 2 in ICU

According to Bernama, a laboratory analysis was conducted following reports of food poisoning cases in Negeri Sembilan.

8 people received treatment for food poisoning suspected to be linked to consuming mussels. Out of the 8, 2 people ended up in the intensive care unit (ICU) because their symptoms were more serious, including paralysis.

Preliminary measures including temporary ban

In the statement, a temporary ban on the sale and harvesting of mussels is implemented.

Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia (DOF) conducted scheduled inspections as part of the National Shellfish Sanitation Programme, which involves sampling both farmed and wild shellfish.

“It is encouraged that the public immediately report any observed suspicious changes in the colour of seawater to the nearest State/District Fisheries Department.”

Mussels are tasty, but for now, we recommend taking a break from them until further notice!
