Just about a month ago, it was revealed that a beggar in Pahang was earning RM500 in a period of 4 to 5 hours at night markets, and that he owned a premium Proton X70 (a car that many hardworking Malaysians may not be able to afford).

Though, it appears that these beggars might actually earn much, much more during the Ramadan season.

According to a report by BERNAMA, the Social Welfare Department (JKM) has revealed that beggars in Kelantan can garner up to 5-figures income in donations from the public during the Ramadan month.

Beggars 2

“The beggars will give (and use) various reasons and tactics, claiming they have no income, not enough money, (saying they are) mentally unstable, using babies to garner sympathy,” shared state JKM director, Said Sudip.

He explained that these beggars’ incomes see a significant increase during the fasting month as our Muslim brothers and sisters tend to become more charitable during this time of year.

An integrated operation by JKM revealed that beggars can earn more than RM300 a day during Ramadan.

Additionally, this has caused foreigners to also beg during the Ramadan season.

Beggars 1

“Every year, during Ramadan, such activities become a trend and the number of beggars will see a significant rise comprising of locals and ‘imported’ beggars, especially from Thailand,” he further shared, adding that healthy, able-bodied beggars would also act like they are differently-abled to attract sympathy.

JKM Kelantan has since captured 25 beggars in 3 operations during Ramadan so far.

“Foreign beggars will be handed to immigration for further action while locals will be given a stern warning,” he said.

It is truly saddening to think that there are those among us who take advantage of the kindness of others when they can work to earn a living.
