A detainee has escaped from the centralised police lockup in Kepayan, Kota Kinabalu on Saturday (16 December), leading the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to call for a manhunt.

The detainee, 33-year-old Nazri bin Hassan escaped right under the noses of the police as he took advantage of a distracted lockup staff who was escorting him and two other detainees to the interrogation room at about 12.30pm.

In the video, the lockup staff can be seen escorting 3 detainees to the interrogation room, with the escaped criminal being on the right of the 3 during this time.

The 3 stayed outside of a grilled door area while the lockup staff went inside to open another door.

Seeing that the staff was distracted, the man took the opportunity to quickly climb the grilled door.

When the lockup staff realised this, the criminal was already too far up that he couldn’t chase after him.

The lockup staff then quickly lead the other 2 detainees into the area between the grilled door and the interrogation room, locked the grilled door and rushed outside the door, presumably to alert the other officers of the Kepayan centralised lockup.

As reported by Kosmo!, Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Shahurinain Jais said that after the detainee climbed the grilled door, he tiptoed on a window’s edge over a recreation area and exited the building by climbing over a fence outside.

Personnel at the Kepayan centralised lockup chased after him but failed to apprehend the criminal as he scurried into a bushy area nearby.

Manhunt of the escapee is still ongoing, with the police launching an operation named “Op Tutup” just for that purpose.

The man was placed at the lockup while under remand from 10 to 18 December for a probe under Section 431A of the Penal Code which is for committing mischief by cutting any electric telegraph cable, wire, line, post, instrument or apparatus for signalling.
