A 27-year-old Thai woman attempted to evade the authorities in Melaka recently by jumping out of a window on the 3rd floor of a budget hotel.

However, the woman, suspected to be a sex worker, was eventually detained by officers of the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) after she tried making a run for it.

Taking to its official Facebook page, JIM shared a photo of the woman trying to run at an alleyway behind the budget hotel at 6pm on Monday (6 November) before her eventual arrest. The woman didn’t suffer any injuries.

In the post, JIM further revealed that the incident happened during raids in Melaka Raya by the department under an operation named ‘Op Gegar’.

Melaka JIM director Anirwan Fauzee Mohd Aini said that the woman was among 12 foreign women caught, the others being 8 Thai nationals, 2 Indonesians, 1 Vietnamese and 1 Laotian. All of them are aged between 25 and 35.

Anirwan further asserted,

“All the women were arrested on suspicion of offering sex services for a fee of RM250 to RM350, in addition to violating the conditions of their pass or permit and not having any valid travel documents.”

“The immoral activity was offered through the WeChat application and the immigration operation carried out was based on information from the public and our intelligence over two weeks.”

Besides that, JIM also issued 5 summonses to witnesses, including the hotel manager and customers of the premises to appear at the Melaka Immigration Enforcement Division office to assist investigations.

JIM officers also seized customer record books, condoms, contraceptive pills and sexual contraptions. Anirwan stressed that stern action will be taken under the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) against owners of premises and employers who hire foreigners without valid travel documents and passports or work permits or for harbouring illegal immigrants.
