Hot weather in Malaysia may cause discomfort to many of us at times but it is a blessing in disguise for vehicle tint operators. The demand for tinted windows is likely to increase during the scorching weather but as always, there are certain rules to follow before you spend your bucks on the tint.

In a statement by JPJ today (October 6), Road Transport Department reminds the public not to violate the tinted mirror rules that have been in force for years. They made it clear that they will not tolerate and compromise those who fail to follow the rules, and strict actions will be taken against them.

In case you’re wondering how strict the actions will be, here’s what awaits you if you tint your car windows more than you should.

Fine and jail time!

For your 1st offence, JPJ stated that drivers who are found guilty will be fined not more than RM2,000 or not more than 6 months of jail time.

For Subsequent convictions, you can be fined not more than RM 4,000 or imprisonment of not more than 12 months or both.

How much can you actually tint?

Keep in mind that it’s not illegal to tint your vehicle windows but there are specific levels of tint that all drivers are expected to follow.

As of now, based on the rules set by the Light-Transparency Rate (VLT), here’s how much you can tint,

  • Windshield (70%)
  • Side windows (passenger and driver’s seat) (50%)
  • Rear windows in the backseat (0%)

JPJ advises public to always comply with the existing regulations that have been set.

Those with health issues or safety reasons can apply for approval to use tinted windows at JPJ

Tinted windows do not only shield you from the hot weather but car enthusiasts, especially, can’t deny how they make your car look “cooler”. But rules are rules and it’s always better to follow them to avoid consequences.
