The plane crash at Elmina Central Park, Shah Alam did not only cost the lives of everyone onboard but also an e-hailing driver and a food delivery rider. In the meantime, an orange cat, fondly known as Oyen by the locals was also injured during the incident.

A team of medical officers from the Ministry of Health (KKM) rescued the cat and brought it to the vet but unfortunately, Oyen ultimately did not survive. Just last night (August 27), on its Facebook post, Zul Erwan Veterinary Clinic announced that Oyen has died due to Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which complicated Oyen’s immune system before its death.

“Oyen Elmina is gone forever.”

According to Cornell Feline Health Center, FIV is 1 of the most common infection diseases of cats around the world. Once the virus infects a feline, it leaves the cat vulnerable to other infections, including harmless bacteria, viruses which cause severe illnesses.

A bite wound from an infected cat is primarily the mode of transmission but in Oyen’s case, the vet revealed that the wound complication in Oyen’s backbones allowed the bacterial infection to spread faster, which caused its death. Soon after the infection started, Oyen started to get weak and the team at the vet clinic tried to save it with further treatments but to no avail.

“Oyen didn’t make it despite the immediate treatment. We thank those who have been praying for Oyen”, Zul Erwan said.

Just last week, in another FB post, Zul Erwan revealed that Oyen was in a good condition after the vet cleaned its wound. He also revealed that he has been receiving multiple DMs from the public who expressed interests in adopting Oyen.

“Oyen is not up for an adoption because it still has an owner – 1 of the medical officers from KKM who sent it here.”

A couple of weeks after the tragic accident, the cause of the crash has yet to be determined and Anthony Loke has urged the authorities to speed up the investigation. A team of investigators from the USA were also at the scene last week to assist with the investigation.

Rest in peace, Oyen. We would like to thank the vet team at Zul Erwan Veterinary Clinic for their effort and hard work. Our thoughts and prayers also go to the family members of the crash victims.
