Graduation is one of the most significant events in a student’s life, as it marks the end of the student era before jumping into the working society. In such an important event, the people who are present with us matter. A lot.

Of all people that attend the graduation, our parents deserve to be there the most. Unfortunately, that was not the case for one of the students at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) in Terengganu. For the 27-year-old Muhammad Hafiz Mokhtar, he did not have the luxury of having his father witness one of his greatest achievements during his graduation ceremony.

His father passed away 6 hours prior to his graduation ceremony.

According to the official Facebook page of UniSZA, Hafiz’s father was rushed to the hospital after the he fell down in the house on November 1, which led to a heart attack. Unfortunately, his father was pronounced dead at 1 am, shortly after they reached the hospital.

Despite Hafiz’s heartbreak, the show had to go on. He summoned all the strengths he had and attended the graduation ceremony. Hafiz graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, and he received his scroll from UniSZA’s Pro-Chancellor himself, YM Tunku Datuk Nooruddin Tunku Datuk Seri Shahabuddin.

Not having your loved ones by your side when you receive recognition for your hard work is devastating, and even more so when you have no more opportunities for a moment of celebration with them in your lifetime.

“My father was so excited to attend my graduation ceremony as it was the first experience in our family,” Hafiz said.

One can only imagine how tough it was for Hafiz to walk up the stage to receive his scroll with the shattered fragments of his heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with Hafiz and the family, and we would also like to congratulate Hafiz on the completion of his studies.
