Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that the Federal Government had given their approval to the  suggestion of increasing minimum wage in Malaysia. Speaking during the annual UMNO General Assembly in PWTC today, Ismail said that our country will be implementing a new national RM1,500 monthly minimum wage starting 1 May 2022.

Previously, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan has alluded to the minimum wage being increased by the end of 2022 without giving a specific date. Furthermore, many quarters have pushed for the increase of minimum wage in Malaysia for quite some time now, especially given the economic uncertainty and hardship faced by the rakyat since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister even touched on that during his announcement today and in a post on his official Facebook page, Ismail stressed that Malaysians within the B40 group are stressed due to rising cost of living. That is why the government believes that now is the right time to increase the minimum wage in our country.

Ismail Sabri asserted,

“The cost of living is rising. This puts more pressure on the B40. Today, I announce that the government will be implementing a new minimum wage of RM1,500 per month starting from 1 May 2022 throughout the country.”
