It’s the holiday season now and many people are either on vacation already or prepping for their next trip during this time. One of the popular destinations that Malaysians love to visit would be Seoul, South Korea for its cool fashion trends, handsome oppas and yummy food.
While we have loads of Korean snacks and restaurants here already, there is actually still a huge plethora of food that we probably haven’t tried before. So, if you’re heading there anytime soon, get your hands on these snacks to take home as souvenirs (or just for your own personal stash) and get ready to indulge in all that snacking. Some of these may be available in Malaysia but trust us, it’s way cheaper there especially if you’re buying a lot!
1. Tteokbokki snacks
Everyone who has ever eaten Korean food before would have definitely tried tteokbokki, the rice cakes with the sweet spicy sauce that is the quintessential street food. If you want to enjoy this flavour again when you’re at home, then get some of these tteokbokki flavored snacks to satisfy your cravings. They taste almost like the real thing and are much crispier too!
2. Sunflower seed chocolate ball
Sure, we eat sunflower seeds all the time and it is often great fun to peel open those seeds to pop them in our mouths. However, we bet that you have never tried them this way before, covered in some yummy chocolate! We know everything tastes better with chocolate!
3. Tom’s Farm flavoured nuts
There are loads of flavoured nuts available in convenience stores and marts in Seoul but the most popular brand has definitely got to be Tom’s Farm. They produce some of the most popular flavours that have everyone going crazy over it. Some of the must-try flavours include Honey Butter, Banana and Wasabi, and they all come in different nut variants so you can pick your fave. PS: They even have other cool flavours to try such as salted caramel and sweet red bean!
4. Yakult yogurt jelly
Not only does this look cute but it tastes totally refreshing too! The jelly pieces are shaped like a mini Yakult bottle and they come in three flavours: Original Yogurt Jelly, Apple Yogurt Jelly and Strawberry Yogurt Jelly. It’s chewy and delicious, which makes it a great snack to share around too.
Everyone knows that South Korea has loads of weird and wonderful selection of ramen flavours to make sure you will never get bored. Of course, you can stick with the popular spicy “fire” noodles that are a global icon now but you can always try other flavours if you’re feeling experimental! This is perfect when you’re craving a nice supper in your hotel room!
6. Orion fish-shaped moist & chewy cake
Who doesn’t love eating their food that comes in cute shapes? This adorable fish-shaped cake somehow tastes all the more delicious while being moist and chewy too. It’s filled with red bean sauce with a tinge of chocolate inside the dense cake that makes a great souvenir.
7. Crown butter waffles
Now, this may not be anything like the fluffy waffles you know and love but they make a seriously addictive snack as well. It’s essentially like a crispy waffle and it’s so good with its crunchy, buttery, sweet and delightful taste that you might just want to keep it all for yourself. Optional: dipping them in your favourite spread to make it even more sinful!
8. Anything seaweed
For anyone who has been to a Korean restaurant, they must know that seaweed plays an important part in their diet and since it is so popular, it has become a delicious snack! There are so many different varieties out there that range from crispy seaweed sheets, seaweed crisps, flavoured seaweed and many more. Surprise your friends and family with these awesome treats!
9. MarketO real brownies, chips and crackers
I’m sure you have seen these colourful boxes of chocolaty goodness before as they are really popular even outside of Korea and rightly so. For a packaged brownie, it tastes almost like the real thing (hence the name). Plus, they have since branched out to so many other flavours, you will feel like grabbing every single one of them home. That’s not all, the company has other snacks such as chips and crackers too, so if brownies aren’t your thing then just grab something else!
Of course, there are so much more other snacks that are available in South Korea and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Trust us, when you’re there, you might just go crazy looking at all the varieties they have!
Are you visiting South Korea soon? Which of these snacks will you be bringing home? Tell us in the comments if we also missed any of your other favourites!
