Retirement for some can mean spending more time with family and friends, and enjoying the simple pleasures in life that they never got to do when they were so busy with work before. So for many adults and seniors, a big part of their lives after leaving work is to figure out what they can do with the time they have on their hands.
But for one Chinese couple, the answer was simple: travel the world lah!
As reported by China Press and Sin Chew Daily, a retired couple from China consisting of husband Zhang Guangzhu, 71 and his wife Wang Zhongjin, 68, made the decision that many couples may usually think twice about. Leaving the familiar comforts of their own homeland, the two embarked on a journey across the globe together as husband and wife.
Spanning over 40 countries, their travels have taken them as far as countries in Asia, Europe and even South America!
But instead of travelling luxuriously with comfort at their age, both husband and wife took the backpackers route and carried with them 65-liter backpacks each containing all their essentials. That’s dedication right there.

In 2008, they visited 16 European countries that included Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic. Then in 2009, they travelled to the United States, Mexico, Canada, Cuba and Nepal. In 2010, their travels took them to Russia and in 2011, they visited another 20 countries!
In total, they travelled for over 3 years together, from 2008 to 2011, and visited 40 countries.
Despite having only a moderate ability to speak English, this hasn’t stopped them from achieving their travel goals.
While they’re no longer actively travelling around the world, the couple still travels to different cities within China to relive those experiences together, while sharing their stories over popular Chinese social media site Weibo.
We applaud the couple for taking it upon themselves to travel the world together, and hope that they have many more opportunities to do so together!
