There’s no doubt that we Malaysians are all individually-gifted and well-informed in our own ways. However, sometimes, as intelligent or gifted as we are, there are things or habits we do that may make us seem otherwise.

Obviously, none of us would want to fall into that category. Everyone wants to come off as smart and sophisticated, right? Well, here are some things that can easily make you seem like the most atas person around:

1. Walking at the same speed as everyone else

This probably sounds weird, but Carey Morewedge, a professor from Boston University, carried out a study on students who watched films of people walking at different speeds, and found that majority of students were inclined to think that the individuals walking slower or faster appeared to be less intelligent.

Although the faster and slower paced individuals may not actually be unintelligent, we somehow perceive it that way. So if you don’t want to be thought of as not smart, walk at the same speed as everyone else!

2. If you own an old car, you can consider booking an e-hailing ride instead

Got a car that’s way passed its expiry date or maybe you just haven’t been maintaining it well enough but you need to attend a fancy event/dinner or perhaps you’re meeting with potential clients/atas people? Not a problem! Why not just make use of the many e-hailing car services available and arrive at your destination in style? 😉

3. Use every single cell in your body to avoid ending your sentences with lah, mah, or wor

That’s right, leave all your lah’s, mah’s, mou’s, wor’s, and so forth at home. We’re not asking you to be pretentious but it won’t kill you to speak in proper England right?

You’ll be surprised how much more sophisticated people will perceive you to be when you cut down on your Malaysian or Manglish slang. If you think about it, more often than not, Malaysians who don’t use the Malaysian slang often seem more atas and respected by the people around them; but of course, don’t put on a fake British or American accent lah.

4. Let your emotions take a backseat

Never do anything based on your emotions, it almost always backfires and you’ll probably regret it later on. If and when you do get angry or upset for whatever reason, take deep breaths, count to 10, or excuse yourself. People who react based on their emotions are often disliked or the outcast of the group. So classless!

Cussing and swearing are definitely off the table too!

5. Wear clothes that aren’t too loose or too tight, just right

In our community today, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is rarely ever practised. First impressions are incredibly important, and wearing clothes that fit your body well will affect how people look at you.

We’re not saying you need to constantly be in a suit and tie, but loose and baggy clothing will give off a sloppy vibe and you probably wouldn’t trust someone in baggy clothes to get the work done. On the other hand, tight clothing may cause others to assume you’re self-absorbed. So make sure to wear something that fits just right.

6. Add a dash of wood or leather to your life

Adding a touch of rustic to our oh-so-modern lifestyle can really make a difference to our overall look.

When it comes to our living spaces, with technology and appliances like our TV dominating the space, a touch of nature can really change the overall feel and make it all the more sophisticated-looking. Same goes for leather goods. Remember not to overdo it though; a little goes a long way and many times, less really is more.

7. Spoil yourself every once in a while

This isn’t to say you should be a shopaholic, but occasionally rewarding yourself with nice things is necessary! What’s more, whatever you buy can up your atas game! Nice clothes, atas home appliances, the latest gadgets; all these things have a way of making us feel a tad bit more confident and it definitely makes us seem a bit more sophisticated too.

If you’re wondering what’s the next item you should splurge on to up your atas game, here’s a suggestion: Get yourself SONY’s Bravia OLED TV! A TV is, like we mentioned, the main focus in a living room.

The XBR-A1E Bravia OLED series is possibly the most stylish and sophisticated thing you’ve ever seen. The superior, 4K HDR picture that this TV offers will give you an experience you and your jelly friends will never forget.

It also runs with the world’s first Acoustic Surface™ sound system and has a cutting-edge stand-less form. Did we mention it contains over 8 million self-illuminating pixels? Talk about high definition to the max. You’ll not only be the most sophisticated person around, you’ll also be the envy of all your friends!
