A man was shot by his own father during a birthday celebration he had organised at an apartment in South Korea on July 19 (Saturday) around 9:30 PM.

Police responded to an emergency call from a woman reporting that her father-in-law had shot her husband, where they found the son collapsed with gunshot wounds.

A homemade firearm was used in the shooting

The victim, in his 30s, was rushed to the hospital by 11:09 PM but was pronounced dead shortly after.

The suspect fled the scene but was arrested around 12:20 AM on July 21 (Monday) in Seoul’s Gangnam area, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. The 63-year-old was reportedly still carrying the weapon, a homemade pipe-shaped shotgun loaded with buckshot, which was used to shoot his son in the chest.

Meanwhile, neighbours in the area said arguments between the father and son were often heard, and residents of the Ssangmun-dong apartment complex described the suspect as once friendly but increasingly withdrawn in recent years.

Police successfully defused a bomb that had been set to detonate

After his arrest, the suspect revealed to police that he had planted an explosive device in his apartment, prompting authorities to quickly evacuate 105 residents and dispatch a police special operations team.

The team successfully defused a homemade bomb containing gasoline, thinner, a timer, and ignition components, which had been set to detonate at noon, but police intervened nearly seven hours earlier.

A further search of the apartment uncovered 14 more explosive devices, along with containers of flammable liquids and additional ignition tools.

“We are currently investigating how both the weapon and explosives were made, as well as the motive behind the crime. Based on early findings, we believe the weapon was homemade and unlikely to have been purchased,” the police added.
