A man in his 60s has died after suffering multiple broken ribs sustained during an assault by a homeless man at the Kampung Jawa food court in Butterworth, Penang. The attack reportedly occurred on Saturday (24 January).
Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief ACP Anuar Abdul Rahman stated that the police were informed by Hospital Seberang Jaya about the victim’s death following the assault.

In a statement, Anuar revealed that the victim, who had no identification document on him, was brought to the hospital at around 2:48 AM on 24 January and was pronounced dead at approximately 7:30 PM the following day while receiving treatment.
Following the incident, police arrested a homeless man, reportedly in his 40s, to assist with the investigation.
“The victim, who was also homeless, was pronounced dead at around 7:30 PM while receiving treatment at the hospital. A post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was coronary heart disease. The victim also suffered fractures to the ribs on the left side of his body,” the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief added.

The suspect tested positive for drugs
Anuar added that initial tests showed the male suspect had tested positive for methamphetamine.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code.
“Police urge anyone with information about this case to contact the Senior Investigating Officer, ASP Hasryman bin Osman, at 04-576 2222 (ext. 2275) or visit any nearby police station to help with the investigation.”
