The Terengganu State Government is considering a proposal to designate safe locations for the public to set off fireworks and firecrackers starting next year’s festive season.

Terengganu State Local Government, Housing and Health Executive Committee Chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying that the initiative is meant to prevent such activities from being carried out indiscriminately in public places.

Protecting sensitive areas

Wan Sukairi added that the measure is also meant to protect sensitive locations such as near hospitals, mosques, suraus, houses of worship, and residential areas from disturbance.

He revealed that his committee has received many complaints from the public regarding fireworks and firecrackers being set off in public, especially in the aforementioned locations.

Furthermore, the State Government is identifying suitable open areas for such activities. It’s also studying the need to limit the types of fireworks and firecrackers allowed in the proposed designated zones.

Wan Sukairi stated that the proposal to create the designated special zones is meant to control the use of firecrackers that produce excessively loud noise and preserve public peace.

Among the locations considered are open spaces that are far from densely populated areas, such as fields, recreational areas, or any locations that received approval from the local authorities (PBT).

Safety and time restrictions

He added that these proactive measures are crucial to minimise the risk of untoward incidents such as fires, injuries, and disruptions to community peace.

Wan Sukairi stated:

“We are also evaluating proposals to set specific times for playing with firecrackers and fireworks so that they do not exceed midnight.

“Once the study is finalised, the use of firecrackers and fireworks in sensitive areas, including densely populated residential zones, hospitals, schools, and petrol stations, will be completely prohibited.”
