For many of us Malaysians, the Movement Control Order (MCO) is unfamiliar territory. It’s a brand new experience and while some of us are being considerate human beings by staying at home, there’s still a large number of us–approximately three million–in Malaysia alone that just WON’T. STAY. HOME. C’mon lah guys, think of all the people you could potentially infect!

What’s more, there are Malaysians out there who have to work on the frontlines to protect us, and while they’re working tirelessly, the rest of us who can enjoy work-from-home privileges can (and SHOULD) do our part to help too! Yes, you can STILL do your part at home, here’s how:

 

1. If you were one of the thousands who went panic-shopping, for the love of humanity, share your items with neighbours!

Because we all know you won’t be able to use up the 22 packets of pasta, 19 tins of tuna, or 30 packets of toilet roll that you bought.

Panic buying has been an issue since the start of Covid-19 and while you might be stocking up for your family or a possible lockdown, there are people, especially the elderly or physically disabled, who need it more than you but are left with nothing at all. So be considerate and treat your neighbours the way you want to be treated! There’s enough for everyone if we stop being greedy and hogging everything. Don’t so kiasi please.

 

2. Treat EVERYTHING you bring home as a possible carrier of Covid-19

As we all know by now, the Covid-19 bacteria is able to linger on surfaces for hours at a time. From your clothing to the plastic bags used to carry your groceries, they can be anywhere! So if you ever go grocery shopping or have stuff delivered to your home, here are some things you can do:

  • Designate a specific spot in your house for all outside items coming in and leave them there for at least 24 hours
  • If you return home from somewhere, head straight to the bathroom and leave your clothes in a pail of soapy water before taking a bath yourself
  • If something is being delivered to you, ask for the parcel to be placed in front of your gate so you can minimise contact and protect yourself as well as the delivery man from possible infections

 

3. Sanitise ALL the items in your house that you touch or handle often

Otherwise, there’s really no point in washing your hands for 20 seconds if everything else in your house is STILL covered in germs and bacteria.

Things like doorknobs, light switches, computer keyboards, remote controllers, handphones, wallets, and more are so terribly filthy, you won’t believe it. So if you have sanitisers or antibacterial wipes at home, wipe down all of these items as often as you can. You can never be too careful now. If you’ve got none of those, just soak an old towel in some soapy water and wipe. It takes just a few minutes but it can make a world of difference!

 

4. STOP. SPREADING. FAKE. NEWS.

Everyone is understandably on edge right now, so spreading false information or fake news articles isn’t going to help. While some of these news pieces or WhatsApp messages may seem helpful, if they aren’t certified to be true by official news portals, DON’T SHARE THEM. Here are some good examples of fake news articles to avoid sharing no matter how legitimate they sound:

  • Possible Covid-19 case(s) at (insert popular location here)
  • Photos of nurses or doctors in protective suits at (insert another popular location here)
  • Supplements/ herbs/ medications/ drugs that can help prevent or cure Covid-19 based on “scientific research”
  • News of a possible lockdown or other distressing occurrences as shared by “someone working in the government”

 

5. BE KIND to our front-liners

This includes doctors, nurses, policemen, those working in the F&B industry, delivery men, bus drivers, journalists, and so forth.

These are the people who are required to keep working in spite of the pandemic taking place, so the least you can do if you ever come in contact with these individuals is be kind to them. For those of us stuck at home, you’ll probably be expecting deliveries for your food, groceries and other essentials, and instead of treating your delivery guy like a threat and possible Covid-19 carrier, remember that he’s human too. Say “thank you” or offer a tip. It’s the least we could do.
