Yesterday (16 September), a total number of 3,200 tourists stepped foot in Langkawi after the island finally opened its doors for domestic travel.
Unfortunately, 5 tourists tested positive for Covid-19 on the first day of the government’s Langkawi Tourism Bubble Pilot project. Health Director-General, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah stated that the screenings were conducted at air and sea entryway to Langkawi, and the positive cases were all under Category 1 and asymptomatic.
The tourists had been ordered to undergo Home Surveillance and Observation (HSO) and they are expected to be isolated for a period of 10 days, as reported by The Edge Markets.
Dr Hisham mentioned that a total of 2,546 people were screened at the air and sea entryway to the resort island, of which 1,250 people were screened at four airport entryways and 1,296 people at the Kuala Perlis ferry terminal. In the meantime, 12 children under 6 years old did not undergo the screenings and they were allowed to enter the place with their respective families.
He has also emphasized the importance of not taking the relaxations for granted.
“If we take the flexibility lightly, it’s not impossible for the infection situation to get worse.”
Tourists who exhibit symptoms during or after their visit are also urged to seek immediate medical care, or at least to conduct self-tests to prevent the spread of the virus.
According to Bernama, the Ministry of Health (MOH) will maintain its efforts in improving and facilitating the process and implementation of Covid-19 screenings to ensure they run smoothly and effectively.
Although the Langkawi Tourism Bubble Pilot project is opened for fully vaccinated individuals, the Covid-19 screenings are still mandatory prior to entering the island in order to avoid another outbreak.
As more sectors are opening, we would like to remind everyone to not violate the SOPs under any circumstances.
