Thankfully, no one was harmed!
A total of 312 passengers on board a ferry from Langkawi to Kuala Perlis were stranded for more than two hours after the vessel’s propeller found itself stuck in fishing nets. As reported by national news agency Bernama, the incident occurred at approximately 9pm last night when the ferry took its regular route to Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal from the Kuah Passenger Ferry Terminal in the island of Langkawi. The ferry reportedly sailed from Kuah at 8pm.
Following the emergency, Konsortium Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd Human Resources and Operations manager Captain Baharin Baharom said that the company sought help from fishing boats to tow the ferry safely to Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal. He further commented,
“The incident caused the ferry to be stranded for about 2 hours… We also asked assistance from the Fire and Rescue Department who sent divers to cut the fishing nets that accidentally caught the vessel’s propellers,”
As reported by Astro Awani, Konsortium Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd which runs the ferry’s operation have since asked fishermen in the area to not lay out fishing nets within the route of the vessel so as not to endanger the safety of passengers in the future.
