An anonymous sharing by a 24-year-old woman caught the attention of Malaysians recently after she sought advice online about her finances.
Shared anonymously online and reposted by @pelisahh on X (formerly Twitter), the post went viral, with over 469,000 views and 2,800 likes as of this writing.
Spends most of her salary on beauty treatments
In the post, the 24-year-old Malaysian woman revealed that despite having a job with an RM1,800 salary nett monthly, she doesn’t have any savings and asked whether this is normal for someone her age.
The woman added that she’s currently living with her parents, and her only monthly commitments are PTPTN student loan repayment and car fuel.
However, because she had few financial commitments, the woman spends most of her pay on monthly beauty treatments and products, including laser treatments.
She shared,
“I thought that at a time when I don’t have many commitments, I could spend my money on these beauty products and treatments. Is my mindset that bad? I pay for the beauty commitments via instalments and would probably finish this August.”
The woman further asserted that she sometimes worries about not having savings, though she mostly has the “you only live once (YOLO)” mindset.
She then asked netizens to ‘reprimand’ her so that she could grow some consciousness about her finances.
Malaysians advised her to prioritise needs over pleasures
In the comments, many Malaysians gave their 2 cents and advised the woman to prioritise more important things.
One commenter said that she earns more than RM10,000 a month but only uses cleanser and sunscreen for her beauty treatments. She was urged to stop spending her money needlessly and at least save RM200 a month.
Meanwhile, another commenter advised the woman to set a mindset of saving for a goal and not to spend on pleasures but only on needs.
Besides that, one Malaysian urged her to start saving small, around RM50 to RM100 a month, to train herself in prioritizing savings.
