The Penang State National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) is providing the public with a stark insight into the life of a ketum addict, highlighting the case of a 22-year-old man in Bayan Lepas who lived in a room filled with bottles of his own urine.
Sharing the story on its Facebook page, the agency detailed how the man’s year-long addiction to ketum had left his life in complete disarray.

The agency wrote, “A 22-year-old man is believed to have been addicted to ketum for almost a year. It began with him simply trying it out. Eventually, his life lost all direction. He is unemployed, lives in squalor, and acts aggressively if he is not given money to buy ketum water.”
“What is most shocking is that, despite the toilet being only a few steps from his room, he chose to urinate into drinking bottles until they filled his entire living space.”
The dark side of the leaf

AADK Penang went on to explain the severe consequences associated with the substance.
“This is the dark side of ketum addiction that is rarely seen. Ketum is not just ‘leaf water’. It can damage your mind, your dignity, and your family relationships,” the agency stated.
“Do not wait for things to reach this level of desperation before seeking change. Addiction ignores age, occupation, and background. If you know someone who needs help, offer support rather than criticism,” it added.
