Traditional gender norms may still be a thing in our country, especially among the older generations.
Though, it appears that the older generations may be having trouble letting go of these gender norms with the younger generations.
A young Malaysian woman took to the SecretsMY Twitter page to anonymously share how her mother disallows her from leaving the house, going so far as to only let her attend online classes for her higher education.
She wrote, “My strict mum locks me in the house. I’m a 21-year-old girl. I’ve actually been living like this for years but recently, when I started my Degree life, she decided to lock me in the house more than before.”
“It’s been exactly 2 and a half months since I haven’t been allowed out of the house. (I’m) not even allowed to open the house gate. I’m doing my Degree online because she doesn’t let me go to campus nor have a job. I can only work under her as her bank assistant.”

The isolation as well as only seeing the walls inside her house is sending her mental health into a spiral.
“Of course I still have everything (I need) here but it’s driving me crazy. My grades have dropped like mad and my depression has started to come back.”
“I can’t go out for a jog, I can’t have friends over too. I can’t go out from the neighbourhood because it’s a guarded area with CCTVs around. Since then, my life has only been in my room. Even then, I’m scolded by my mum because I’m in my room too much. Trust me, I can’t call my friends too. I really don’t know what to do,” she added.
Having such an isolated lifestyle, especially by force, can be a distressing and extremely lonely.
We genuinely hope that the young woman manages to find a way to convince her mother (who sounds a little like Mother Gothel from Tangled) to let her live her life more freely.
