18yo Teen in Penang Dies from Electrocution While Charging His Smartphone Using Socket on Express Bus

A teenager has tragically died in Butterworth, Penang, after he was electrocuted while charging his smartphone using a socket onboard an express bus at the Penang Sentral bus terminal.

The incident took place at around 7.40pm yesterday (1 November) while the victim, 18-year-old Mohamad Nur Asymawi, was onboard the tour bus before it left for Kuala Lumpur from Penang.

Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman was quoted by Harian Metro as saying that the incident was noticed by other passengers before it was reported to the police by the 36-year-old bus driver.

An initial investigation by the police found burn marks on the victim’s left fingers, believed to be a result of the electrocution when charging a smartphone.

Moreover, the ends of the charging cables were found melted while the smartphone was in a hot condition.

Anuar further commented,

“The bus driver claimed that the victim boarded the bus to KL Sentral at around 6pm, but 10 minutes later, one of the passengers informed the driver that the victim screamed before he was found foaming at the mouth.

“The driver then called the ambulance, but the medical officer who came confirmed that the victim had died,”

 

The case has been classified as sudden death

An autopsy at Hospital Seberang Jaya (HSJ) confirmed that the victim died from electrocution. Accordingly, the police classified the case as sudden death.
